A Woman Who Gains Respect

Installment #20 of my self-assigned project to study the "re" words in God's Word. (For further explanation of this undertaking, refer to the entry titled "Reach, Read and Reap" from February 3, 2011.)

____________________________________________________________________________

Respect

(noun) a sense of worth or excellence of a person; esteemed, honored, favored

"A kindhearted woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth." Proverbs 11:16

In this proverb a kindhearted woman is compared to a man who retains wealth. Some versions put it differently, that the "gracious woman retains her honor" just as "strong men retain their wealth". The gracious woman is eager to "preserve her reputation for wisdom and modesty, humility and courtesy, and all those other graces that are the true ornaments of her" gender. Women who are truly kindhearted and gracious will secure their reputation and honor by acting with prudence and conduct becoming of a godly woman.

Lord, would You make me a woman who is gracious and kindhearted; a woman of excellence in Your eyes? One who seeks wisdom, presents herself modestly, acts with humility and courtesy. Help me to conduct myself as a godly woman in all aspects of my life I pray. In Jesus' name, amen.
